Chains Aw Man #09 — Snake Parkour!

December 6th, 2022

I like to imagine Michael Scott yelling that.

Impressions:

The funny part of this episode is that for the first time in nine goddamned episodes, someone other than the protagonist got a brief moment to be a badass. And it was the obnoxious shrieking redshirt girl from the previous arc who has apparently developed snake-based parkour and sharpshooting skills. Which I'll also add, means that the sword guy continues his trend of losing to literally every single bloody person he fights, except when he can spontaneously cut them in half with the "no, you can't see this animated" move. This is the kind of action direction I would expect from a Saturday morning Power Rangers or magical girl show. You have literally one special move and it always instantly kills. No, you can't see it. I imagine that we were supposed to take the manipulative crazy lady regenerating from the dead and psychic crushing a bunch of people offscreen and then on the opposite side of the city as her 'cool moment' too, but like sword dude, it's just arbitrarily coming back from the dead and then making silly hand motions while people pop into goo. You're not even using the powers already revealed and explained. Maybe stop pulling new super duper ultimate ones out of your asses every five minutes.

Not too much interesting in most of the rest. They did animate the fight between chainsaw-face and sword-face, but that only lasted maybe two minutes, and was again, unceremoniously cut short to reset things back to "Denji's totally deadish again," until he's not. There's more to constructing a good action sequence than just throwing a ton of frames at the screen until one goes "Special Move: I win!" It also came at the start of the episode leaving the rest of the episode to try to subsist off of snake parkour. The other obnoxious screaming dude got shot in the head, so that's one less obnoxious screaming person in the show, unless he too spontaneously revives.

It really is starting to feel like you’re trying to find any reason to dislike this show. That episode was amazing.
