Akiba Maid War #07 — Nin Nin

November 17th, 2022

Ninjas are having a rough time this season.

Impressions:

Once again, I feel like this is trying to be parody, but is falling on the wrong side of the dividing line between parody and just plain stupid. Nagomi runs away to work at a ninja cafe, and in an afternoon of playing with a bar game, becomes a master ninja, so she spends the entire back end of the episode screaming that she's a maid and various gibberish until the white one simply gives up and leaves. I feel like it's also important to mention that the big bad of this arc did literally nothing but scream and get beat up. By everybody. Including Nagomi. Not quite the imposing threat that the show was making her out to be in any way shape or form.

A lot of the above paragraph seems like it should be a joke, and perhaps the humor is intended to be that it's played totally straight, but it'd probably have been better served by actually being over the top. Lord knows that the dramatic character 'growth' bits do not work in the slightest when it's quite literally just one side yelling "You're dressed like a ninja" and the other screaming gibberish "moe moe kyun" over and over again until remorseless killers go "Wow, she is such a pure hearted maid. Nothing for me to do but admit her resolve and walk away." This is not sensical behavior on anybody's front, and it's even harder to take that as intending to be a joke. At best, it's weird and vaguely uncomfortable. And yet, there's probably another whole arc of it to go.

At this midway point of the series, it feels like a show where the whole is ultimately going to be far less than the sum of its parts. Even the deaths feel 100% telegraphed here (one of the main boss maids is disposed of by her own members and no sense that any other major character is going to bite it).

A hilarious episode, very well done. At this point in the series the criticism above just feels like deliberate trolling…
