The Bibliophile Princess #01 — Spoiled Child Brides

October 6th, 2022

I've tried nothing and want for nothing and I'm quite melancholic about it.

It's 2022. Please consult an English speaker before you start adding grossly incorrect subtitles in English to your shows.

Impressions:

All I want is to maintain my life of luxury, wanting for nothing, waited on hand and foot by a harem of pretty boys, but here comes this other girl to ruin everything by… not being a self-absorbed recluse. You'd think this was the origin story of a villain, or court intrigue, or even an anti-hero who would now be out to sabotage the other woman in order to keep her life of luxury, but no. Girl is bribed to be a fake fiancee, but constantly internally says she feels bad about it, but not so bad that she's actually going to do anything, and we end the episode with her being super duper sad that her bribe is going to be taken away from her.

Are we really supposed to feel sympathy for this character and her struggle to, again, be at peace with accepting a massive bribe? Are we meant to be rooting for her to win over all the other people who have (rightfully) treated her as a mentally invalid that she took advantage of for apparently years because she's sad that someone else is putting an iota more effort into it than her? Because all I got from this episode was about twenty minutes of "woe is me" while the screen was plastered nonstop in lavish extravagance of sparkling boys and hazy flowers. Self-absorbed, indeed.
