Loner Rock! #03 — And Now, For No Reason, A Maid

October 22nd, 2022

…Okay.

Impressions:

I wasn't thinking I'd be covering this another episode, but I made it all the way through the third episode and it was harmlessly pleasant enough, which is far more than I can say for other shows this season, so I guess here we are on an empty Saturday (though that other comedy that airs super late may very well make an appearance… eventually). The show continues to do a very good job being expressive with the visuals, particularly for comedic effect, and this episode did a bit better than the previous ones on the dramatic side, with the titular character trying to come out of her shell and help someone who's struggling in a similar way to her while also being envious of her.

But the main vehicle of the jokes, the protagonist going into conniptions over every single damn interaction… it's tiring to me. And now there's a second character doing it, but only half the time, either when being able to play a guitar or the blue haired girl comes up. The other half, she's causing the main character to do it. It's not rising that far above its legion of "girls in a club" kin. It's not a weird abstract off-the-wall comedy like SoftTenni, nor has the infectious passion for the club activity like GA Art Class, nor the off-kilter direction and presentation of Pani Poni Dash. It's… fine, for what it is, but I still have trouble seeing myself wanting to continue sticking with it.
