Loner Rock! #02 — Re-Meet and Re-Greet

October 15th, 2022

An introduction following introductions. Oh boy.

Spy x Family finally concluded its dog arc this week with essentially a full episode epilogue where the adults spent the entire episode just standing around declaring "We are so emotional and such a family." Then it took ten minutes to name the dog before they did that again. I think I've had as much of that as I can stomach. The final new show of the season also airs super late today, which means either a 'simulcast' is likely to beat it, or it won't appear for hours after. Either way, late enough for me to be walking dogs and such likely.

Impressions:

Pretty doubtful I'm continuing with this either though. Ten straight minutes of them sitting at a table just doing schtick as a meet and greet is a bit much. We already did our introductions last week. Why on earth are we doing get-to-know-you re-introductions? Then for the second segment, they do pretty much the same thing, but at a concession stand. Maybe if it leaned in more to the occasional weird asides and daydreams, it might be more palatable, but even then, there's no structure or story. I don't personally like cut-aways as jokes all that much, but that seems like most of what is distinctive about this. I don't need, or even want, Shakespeare, but put more effort into the episode than "so, three girls are in a room. Okay, now they're in a different room." Even Keroro has ten times more of a plot and structure than this, for god's sake. Christ, Roadrunner cartoons do.

I've little else to say. She's still going into conniptions with every interaction. All the jokes are "I'm sooooooooo awkward," and then she makes a silly face. It's not high art. Some of the faces will no doubt live on in internet memes because in the world of stupid anime face screencaps, this provides zillions, but it's also directly up against the internet's darling when it comes to stupid anime girl faces of Spy x Family, so possibly won't even manage that.

I like how the put more power into animating random character motions around a bar than into animating a concert (which was just a slideshow). So much for the rock part.
