Loner Rock! #01 — Girls Make Faces
October 8th, 2022
I wish the one creative dude/dudette on staff was in charge.
Impressions:
This show almost has its moments. There's clearly someone on staff who wants to go full absurdist nonsense with the show, and every now and then, he gets his way, and the jokes move away from making a stupid face into either a meta joke about the show already being over, switching to a fish eye lens for a horror-like monster-creeping-up sequence, committing seppuku via guitar, or a Tex Avery-like heart blasting out of a chest in excitment, but for the most part it's… girl makes silly faces. And then weighted down even more heavily at both the start and end because it clearly feels like it needs to throw in some half-assed dramatic character elements about her being socially awkward and these being her first friends, just like every other goddamned club/hobby show in existence.
It's harmless at any rate, though I wouldn't say it does much that sets it apart from any of the other girls-in-a-club shows either, particularly the music themed ones, of which there are already a hundred zillion. It's not even particularly focused on music. Doesn't even do a concert, for better or worse. Just cuts over all the music sequences and then explains that they were either good or bad. Which, again, only leaves a bunch of girls making faces at each other, largely about being socially awkward. Not exactly something rare or notable in anime.

I enjoyed it. Animation was a bit simplistic, but the designs were good and I laughed a few times. Watamote meets K-On.
