Four People and Their Lies #01 — Explosive Periods

The absolute state of sexual education.

Impressions:

I feel like this is slotting straight into the same mental slot for me this season as Teppen!!! fit last season. It's a weird, off-kilter, oddball comedy fueled by a lot of chaos energy that quickly bounces from one joke to the next, and is weird enough for some of the humor to work, with a mix of both deadpan, screaming, and genuinely disturbing jokes, like the ninja girl being covered in blood and going "Uh, uh, it's my period," and the boy and alien just going with it because they're idiots. It's certainly closer to actual absurdism than what usually tries to pass for comedy these days. At least it has SOME kind of gimmick to the characters and we jump into it after a mere five minutes of pure intro. Some shows this season are still stuck in intros even after two episodes.

But at the same time, I can't say most of the jokes landed for me, and it lacked the strong narrative elements of something like SeiZon or any kind of even episodic story that would tie things together. This is the kind of comedy that I would expect Shaft to go crazy with ten years ago. Studio Flad (…who?) is giving it a solid effort, but is still overly reliant on making stupid faces and really, really discordant music/sound effects. Somebody really loves that 56k modem sound as a punchline in particular. Tell a story, let the humor come naturally, and keep building off that. The second half/segment was almost kind of that in that the alien was interrogating them, but even that was quite spurious.
