Do It Yourself! #02 — Benchski

October 12th, 2022

You know skis flex, right? I feel like a bench made of them would be problematic.

Just for the record, I did quickly glance through the molest guild show, but all it did was introduce two new characters, a black mage (molested by a pack of rabbits), and a berserker/paladin (other characters molested by wild boars) who is hyper competent, but then strips and molests the protagonist with her Queen's Blade size chest in her 'holy' frenzy. I swear, fanservice shows of yore were not this horrible. At least, not all of them were.

Impressions:

While certainly the least objectionable show on Wednesdays by a margin that could be more accurately described as a yawning chasm, even with its casual psychological torture of pigs, I'm still not sold on this one. It has moments here and there, but it's also doing its damnedest to avoid engaging with its own premise of being a DIY club. They have two projects in this episode, pebble art and building a bench. If this was GA Art Design Class, those would have been two segments of hyperactive gremlins excitedly explaining the techniques and showing examples in various forms with infectious enthusiasm. Here, though? They just quickly montage past and basically go "Wow, they're such friends." Which also speaks to how superficial it is.

It's fine for what it is, and the animation style does give it more life than the direction or script, but it's just not all that engaging to me and only seems to want to go so far as "girls are friends." Give me at least an episodic plot with an iota of drama and then resolution like you'd find in the laziest sitcom episode. Give me some passion for the actual subject matter. Give me something to sink my teeth into here. Please. Because the other Wednesday shows are… not good.
