Do It Yourself!! #01 — Multiple Stabbings
October 5th, 2022
At least nobody was molested. A true win for Wednesday shows.
Impressions:
This episode raises a lot of questions. It feels like it began as an absurdist comedy, producers got ahold of it, and now it's about arts and crafts. The main character lives with three pets, a giant dog, a cat, and a pig wearing sunglasses, that all sleep in the top bunk. She's sad because she's grown apart from her neighbor, who is a massive tech nerd who has a jellyfish robot that ambushes her when she comes home and screams at her to take a bath. The first girl cannot be trusted to not injure herself with anything more dangerous than a spoon, so of course she's handed power tools and joins shop club. There's an entire flashback/montage sequence where she's explicitly forbidden from playing with anything but not-crayons because she keeps stabbing herself and/or cutting off her hand. Yes, cutting off her hand. Sure that's comical exaggeration, but they show her literally cutting off her hand.
It's largely harmless, maybe even in the upper echelon of these dumb "girls do a hobby" shows. I do prefer the more expressive animation even if the art is a little rougher, and it's certainly distinct in the weirdness in various aspects. A lack of screaming lets the mind drift into a pleasant haze with only the occasional doubletake of random little gags here and there, like the pig being traumatized by pork dinner. Those may be the highlights of the episode, to be honest. It doesn't really have much to do with its shop/woodworking premise though, and as much as it obsesses over its frieeeendship elements, those are probably the weakest part of the show. The tech girl apparently isn't even part of the club going by the outtro sequence.

I think this is supposed to be one of those “comfy” shows that gets by by having “cute” girls, and nothing else of substance going on.
Except, the artwork is kind of atrocious, it’s a minor nitpick, but the main character’s mouth being white, while everyone else’s is red is just weird in a “Janice from the Muppets has a uvula, when no other Muppet has one” kind of way.
