Akiba Maid War #01 — Spurting Fluids

October 6th, 2022

This was weird.

Impressions:

This is a show that apparently seeks to answer the question "What if maids were mafia?" Not the silly mafia like usual though. Serious, brutal, street killing, covered in splattered blood kind. Which I feel is actually far more unusual for anime than assassins in frilly dresses. But at the same time, easily half the episode is just the main character faffing around, being cutesy and awkward in the kind of maid cafe shenanigans that I feel most anime have in some obligatory school festival or similar episode.

But we already spoiled things at the start by gunning down someone in the streets, so all the other little clues that something is slightly off aren't exactly subtle hints. Then we get to the last five minutes of the episode, we visit the bunny cafe where they're forcing a screaming girl to cut off her hair out of disgrace, shoot the head one in the head to a comical repeated fountain of blood before gunning down the entire rest of the bunnies in the street set to a bubblegum pop tune concert.

It's going to get at least a couple more episodes to see what on God's green earth this show even is and what it's doing. It's hard to overstate how bizarre the ending sequence is. So I commend it at least for that. I do wish the actual gunplay bit was a bit more gun-fu and less cheesy pop concert, but hell if I can even adequately explain what exactly it was going for except a jarring clash of content and visuals. Dark comedy. Guns, maids. Uh, pig maids.

It’s hard not to look at this and believe that this show’s gonna be compromised hard by corporate demands by the Big Tech company that’s funding this.

Every so often I think “that was it, that was the season that will finally make aroduc hang it up.” and yet here you are, giving us… maids at war, or something

    you just keep on truckin

Went into this cold. It was a nice surprise at how crazy it was.

I even enjoyed the maid stuff, because they had the other maid providing a cynical commentary on the whole maid cafe thing.
