Akiba Maid War #03 — Foxy Boxing

I must break you.
Impressions:
I don't know about you, but I was shocked, shocked I say, when the new character with the exact same hair as the censored character in the OP became part of the main cast at the end. What was even the point? Anyway, the underground MMA bit did have at least one genuinely good joke right at the end to close things out. After the big dramatic coming together monologue and epiphany of let's all understand each other and are comrades, Ranko knocks her out and everybody celebrates… while she then starts wailing on the unconscious body. Now that's a subversion of the cliche of them now being friends and wandering off for hugs and whatever.
The rest of it though? The new girl's schtick is that she's Russian and she thinks maids have to be cute, therefore Ranko is not a true maid. But smiling is what makes you cute so… uh… that's apparently as much of a coherent thought as the script feels inclined to put together. The manager continues to be an obnoxious imbecile, and there's still no final twist or double bluff on these setups that you'd expect if something like Leverage or MacGyver did an underground fight club episode which could much better show the characters as more saavy, but at this point, which I'd much prefer over being blithe idiots. Christ, not even any Rocky IV jokes or references here. Talk about missing low hanging fruit.

No social commentary, no thematic structure, no laughs… None of these three episodes even gives me the impression that this show will be anything but a piece of shapeless “content”, especially with it squandering its violent twist ending in its premiere.
