Tokyo Mew New Mew #01 — Retro Jam
July 5th, 2022
Tuesdays are already a wash.
Impressions:
In some ways, the complete opposite of the earlier show, but in many, exactly the same. Well, that's probably not totally fair. The animation here is just mediocre instead of non-existent, and the artistic style is at least distinctive in some way. Specifically, all the dumb overreaction facial expressions are throwbacks to the 90s. But they're both shows about boy-hungry imbeciles with no thoughts in their heads about how to get into some 13 year old's pants. Instead of handjobs, this one just does the "oops, I tripped, fell, and french kissed you." Less mistakable for porn, sure, but significantly better? Eh.
The most confusing part is probably that it's a late night anime, and specifically, the one that took over the slot Birdie Wing was in, which was previously held by that one about going to another world with cheat powers and transexuality. This episode was just an excessively bland magical girl affair, and not the subversive kind where one or more are secretly murderers, or the whole thing is a plot to harvest their souls to feed the magic space goat in the sky. Heck, not even the random out-of-place over-animation that Pretty Cure will randomly do just to keep the sakuga bloggers on their toes. Just the absolutely generic crap you'd expect to find on Saturday morning pitching sparkly plastic toys to eight year olds. She gets shot with the magical girl-ification beam which gives her cat ears and a frilly dress. There is a large rat. She beats it by waving a tambourine in its general direction and doing a little dance. As for the rest? BOYS, BOYS, BOYS!

i remember the original show. and the animation in the reboot is much better then the original in my opinion. the thing is kisshu interactions with ichigo might come up as abusive one like the original show which was a bit over the top
