Other World Pharmacy #01 — Twenty Minutes of Exposition

July 10th, 2022

I guess at least there aren't status screens.

Impressions:

If I, god forbid, was ever put in charge of making one of these, I would definitely go for more of a House, or even Quincy approach, where their cheat power was to be smart, and the schtick was solving random (medical) crimes and mysteries. But since I'm not, and the Japanese anime industry does not have my flair for sarcastic quirky crime solving, this is another absolutely generic bundle of crap, with every cliche in the book from the sorting stick to measure his power level to the harem to a first episode absolutely and completely consumed by exposition about the setting and how much cheat power he has from a parade of fanservice girls.

Story? None to speak of whatsoever. Dude is reincarnated and spends the next twenty minutes having the setting explained to him. Animation? Nothing attempted, nothing gained. Characters? Cloying servant girls bequeathed to the protagonist to fuss over him and explain the setting. Cheat powers? According to the sorting stick, they're over 9,000. We have enough of this show. Not these shows. This one singular show. What exactly does this think that it's doing well? Hell, what does this do that's different or even distinguishable from the other pharmacy cheat power shows, let alone other cheat power things in any way, shape, or form? The answer is likely nothing, and that's the entire point.

The cheat powers isn’t even necessary. There’s a manwha that has the Reincarnator MC revolutioned the medical world in her kingdom, just by using her modern medical knowledge. But I guess this is one of those stories that don’t want their MCs to even be slightly inconvenienced…

I think the industry got that kind of thing out of their system back when getting transported to the Sengoku era was the craze. Their power was basic Japanese history and/or having played Samurai Warriors, so they could get with girl-Nobunaga. God, there were seasons with multiple girl-Nobunagas.

It still exist, albeit in a different format. There’s one manga where a history buff schoolgirl landed at (non-genderbent) Nobunaga’s court and proceeds to affect history. Unfortunately the manga proceeds to be a cautionary tale of how a story can be boring even without cheat powers, because the author goes all the way to ensure that all the court intrigue and whatnot never truly inconveniences the protagonist.
