Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer #01 — Flying Lizard

I'm fine with casual iguana cruelty.

Impressions:

The promos certainly set expectations low, and this absolutely lived up to them. The action scene was embarrassingly awful in an episode that was already making a strong case for being the least animated of the season. The production here is quite horrendous, and I can't imagine what it'll be like once the new series gleam wears off in an episode or two. Possibly just power point slides. Which would fit because the episode was also a mountain of tedious exposition. Dude is chosen to fight the world ender. Dude doesn't want to be chosen. Explanation of powers. Monster appears and is immediately defeated. There is a quirky magical girlfriend. Further explanation of powers. Quirky magical girlfriend recruits dude by explaining that she is quirky and magical, and that there is a world ender.

I hate to invoke shows like Shana or Index as something to emulate, but one began with the dough mass of a protagonist being killed and revived by a small child perpetually on fire, and the other having multiple fist fights with an electrified brat. Even without getting into them being animated, those are at least hooks into the magical girlfriend thing and give a lot more of an excuse to refuse the call than announcing how the genre cliches are unbelievable, not to mention a lot more of a fight than one weird statue that mostly just shouts. An optimistic person might say that now that they've got the basic premise of the nonsense all spat out in one episode, they can get on to the story. I am not an optimistic person. I assume that what was in this episode is what will continue. Barely animated, with probably each new sentai member consuming a whole episode of dry exposition about the exact mechanical functionings of their half-assed powers that they use for about 10 seconds total, yet take two to three minutes to explain. Certainly sounds like fun.

Just caught this one, and I can’t take the monsters seriously when they look like the sideways fish from SpongeBob.
