Princess Connect #17 — Look, Ma! We’re Animated Again!

January 31st, 2022

So this is where all the effort went.

Impressions:

Wow, look who finally found the budget and the plot. And a whole lot of boobery fanservice too, but mostly the first two. Especially the budget. Where was this action the first three episodes of this season? Why were we pissing around with idols and multiple incidents of ghost hugging when we could've been punching the hell out of giant monsters? I'm still not at all really interested in the mystery of how it's an MMO that they all forgot they're playing or why there's clones of random cat girls running around, or that the shadow monsters are eating giant golems which are also frilly little girls, except so far as that they're excuses for the animators to flex their muscles and put together some impressive sequences.

Which is to say that it still wasn't a great episode. There were basically no character nor story beats that add the necessary spice, flavor, and weight to events. Hell, there's like five new characters introduced this week and they were all totally superfluous. Almost totally ditching the comedy probably also helped things too, since they haven't been able to come up with any new jokes. But it was a whole lot of over-animated butt-kicking, even if for some reason, they decided that what it needed through most of it was a history and sociological lesson about the hierarchy of gods in the world. Again again, visuals, finally impressive once again. Everything else… why? Just… why?

Anyways, going off on a tangent because I’m bored and don’t want to keep repeating myself when it comes to CyGames fear-mongering and how they’re like modern Disney, but recently, this Star Wars show on Disney+ that’s supposed to star that bounty hunter Boba Fett went on its own tangent last week so that it could be a glorified episode of The Mandalorian.

This series about Boba Fett screeched to a halt just so they can spend an entire fucking episode teasing season 3 of another series only tangentially related and which has little to do with the actual main plot of the series which was supposed to be about Boba Fett and what he did up to The Mandolorian season 2. There was no reason for this other than to keep pushing brand synergy as vertical integrations and acquisitions are at a fever pitch (The grotesque sight of Microsoft buying Activision just for Xbox for example) and all we can do is witnessing these corporations flex their superiority towards their competition which they perceive as weaker in truly ugly ways.

What I’m trying to say is that brand synergy and vertical integrations are sickening me, and CyGames is participating in this grotesque practice, starting with their crossover events in their gachashit. Believe me when they’ll starting pulling this practice in their shows too just to get those extra BD sales. They’re already pulling this brand synergy shit with introducing as many waifus from the game into this series as possible.

Just wait until they shove in something designed to add pathos to this non-existent narrative like “This show was actually about TRAUMA!!!” or god forbid, make up an entire episode about gender wokeness around that trap character from the game.
