Selection Project #01 — Japanese Idol

September 26th, 2021

Failure is always an option.

Again, a pre-air for autumn. Real broadcast begins October 1st.

Impressions:

While next season has another obnoxious glut of reincarnations in fantasyland stories, it's actually pretty devoid of idol crap, with this being one of only two, and the other is about vampire glam rockers. At least, probably. There's also one about a dancing robot from the 80s, and a classical music themed Princess Connect clone advertisement thing, but I digress. And digression is important, because otherwise I'll have to concentrate on idol schlock. Well, maybe that's being a little too harsh on it, but probably not. The episode is basically like a reality show, except that the sickly main character to whom being an idol is all her hopes and dreams ends up getting kicked out in the first round after getting dizzy and collapsing on stage, and ends the episode sobbing in the middle of the street.

It's not the usual arc that idol things bend to, but I still have zero faith that it will be about realizing how psychotic and exploitative the idol business is either, let alone these reality show competitions, or even be an episodic thing where they showcase a new one having their dreams crushed and crying each week. She'll probably either find a way back in or it'll timeskip to the next season where she succeeds and everything is all worth it. She definitely won't move on nor find a healthier way to enjoy music than submitting yourself to the predatory industry for slavering fans. I guess at least there wasn't any CGI dancing like the promos put front and center. But there wasn't much in the way of animation in general either, and when your format is to ape American Idol, aside from the overly melodramatic sob story, the rest is just an introduction montage for all the rest of the cloying cast.
