The Great Jahy #03 — Space Pirate

August 14th, 2021

Why are we parodying a genre that hasn't existed for about thirty years?

Annoyingly, Fena's being truly simulcast (a real rarity) at 9 PM Pacific/midnight Eastern, plus it's an hour long premiere. I'll get to it tonight, but that's late enough for someone who's normally up at 6am because his dogs control his life to not be at their mental peak.

Impressions:

I'm not totally sure what the space pirate battle was after the ED, but I would rather have watched more of that than the actual episode, which was basically just doing last week's gags all over again. So we've had two episodes that might have been about a 12 minute segment in a well-paced comedy, instead stretched out for almost two full episodes, and presumably continuing on to next week. We could've taken things in a kind of Keroro direction, with outlandish plots to do… whatever… each week, only fewer weird frog aliens, more (well, even more) fanservice. Or remember that weird-ass hyper Family Diary show? Could've gone in that direction and amped up the character drama and/or slapstick.

But we are doing neither. They do a short bit about using the magic rock to do chores, then it's back to sitting in cafes, mentally cursing how she needs to pretend to still be super but is not in order to impress a masochistic imbecile who never doubts any lie she's told, so why even bother trying? Note, cafes. Plural. First one, then the other she works at. Because changing the punchline from her not paying for it, to her paying for it, was well worth the extra five or so minutes spent on that segment. I think this is where we part ways, Jahy. Find some goddamned jokes, already.
