The World Ends With You #02 — Oops, No More Budget

April 16th, 2021

Maybe should have swung the camera around a little less while squabbling with frogs last week.

Impressions:

I don't know if I'll keep up with this past here. I'm pretty much out of anything to say other than remarking on the production collapse, and that's, uh… Well, the production collapsed, and this episode was basically just copy and pasting the cutscenes for the next couple days of the game, complete with some of the really obnoxious gamification stuff that it had thankfully skipped last week. I guess they found some time in the script to work in tutorials about mechanics after all.

If that's all you want to see, god speed, I guess. I think there's a lot more that could be done with an adaptation than just copying the script, word for word, scene for scene, from one medium to another, especially when the mediums are already pretty damn similar to begin with. Do your own thing, even if you hit the same overall story beats, characters develop in the same way, and you reach the same ending. It's about the journey, and this seems to have no greater ambition than to simply retell it, which is just plain boring to me. There's more than one way to skin a cat, and you still end up with someone's flayed housepet.
