Shadows House #01 — THIS IS SOME GODDAMNED TASTY BREAD
April 10th, 2021
Please stop yelling at me, you strange, highly strung girl.
Impressions:
Well, it started out playing up the horror angle of the story with a bunch of kids being drugged brainwashed by parasitic soot nobility in a cultish ceremony, but that quickly fell away. It would occasionally tease returns to it, that Blondie was having some kind of mental breakdown from thinking herself a broken doll and no use to her master, then her stomach would grumble and it'd jump to making food jokes and shrieking about how delicious bread is. I can't stress how much shrieking and rolling around there was about bread. The girl only really has two modes; loudly worrying and loudly screaming about how excited she is. It's… exhausting. Like being trapped in a room with a yipping chihuahua.
Since it doesn't engage much with its eventual turn to being Promised Neverland but with occasional slapstick, that leaves the episode with only the slapstick, and that's more high pitching shrieking than pratfalls or pies to the face. I didn't even like Promised Neverland either though, so something that engages with the selling point even less is a hard sell. At best, it's a very, very slow burn in a medium that already plods. Maybe in four or five episodes, it'll get around to the ostensibly interesting part, but it's got a whole bunch of character introductions to get through first and doesn't seem to be in any hurry anyway.
