Backflip!! #01 — Demerits for Lack of Fidelity to Program Regulations

April 8th, 2021

Boy, that's a lot of CGI.

Impressions:

I looked this up on the internet, and a group rhythm gymnastics program is 2:15 to 2:30 long. This is an important factoid because the performance here is a hair over three minutes. Or if you include all the time spent watching them walk onto the mat, lights dramatically going out, peanut gallery gasping, etc, nearly five goddamned minutes. That is a staggering amount of time to be trapped in a room with lanky, jank CGI boys cartwheeling around, occasionally reverting back to normal animation for a moment or two before right back to creepy CGI mannequins cavorting around.

This is not one of the high school club shows that rocks the boat. It's every cliche, right down to needing to recruit members or face the wrath of the student council. Baseball dude who has apparently never seen a gymnast before is utterly captivated, engulfed in sparklies just by seeing this totally alien sport, triumphantly does one part of it to more sparklies and speedlines, thus saving the club and igniting his passion for [INSERT RANDOM CLUB ACTIVITY HERE]. Some day, one of these will be a surprise backdoor into… I don't know… a Dexter-like serial killing spree where it's actually a gruesome murder club that secretly kills the hundres of thousands of clandestine Nazi parasite monsters infecting the dreams of teenagers. And it'll still probably be boring. But for now, we're stuck with just an unusual amount of extra janky CGI boys doing flips and posing.

There’s something so janky about the way the people are drawn here.
