Back Arrow #03 — Please, Take Our Battleship

January 22nd, 2021

I guess we're Nadesico now.

Impressions:

I feel a little bit better that it only took a commercial break for Greenie to come to her senses about the dumbass plan to turn Arrow over to the people who just attempted to murder all of them because he totally promised to… uh, go easy on them in their new dreadnought after having destroyed the village? They unearthed a ginormous war machine the size of a city, three giant mechs in a world where even one is pretty rare, and the first thing they do is throw themselves at the mercy of the local nobility? These guys aren't even hiding how evil they are. They literally cackle with glee about how evil they are. And stupid too. Their grand plan was to destroy all the super valuable stuff they've uncovered and could have hijacked because that way, they can maintain their neutrality. As everyone knows, the best way to stay neutral is to say that you've destroyed priceless things that they want so that other people can't have them. Especially for such obviously honest and sane people.

Anyway, it was another fairly mediocre episode in the grand scheme of things, but that still puts it far ahead of Friday's other two contenders: "So I'm a Screaming Idiot Monster and Look at All These Status Screens" and "I'm Unpopular and Have No Friends Except For Every Single Popular and Attractive Girl in School." I really think that this is trying to evoke old mecha shows like Vandread or Nadesico, but Christ, is the writing struggling hard. Beginning with the five minute cutaway to check in on court intrigue, ending with "You guys should totally be banging," only to jump right to the villagers continuing to act like absolute lunatics just had me shaking my head in utter disbelief for the entire first half.

I don’t know what it says that a show that would have been a dime a dozen in the aughts is the only new show I can unequivocally say I’m enjoying this season

  • Fede says:

I don’t see a huge resemblance to those two in particular (this is more like Xabungle or even Overman King Gainer for instance), but even so…you really could go equally unnecessarily cynical and super negative about how characters reacted unrealistically at various points in those series too, if you wanted.

  • Ark noir says:

I’m gonna give this anime time til they reach the wall ala attack on titan.

I’m only watching it cos of the nostalgia look and feel.
