Actidol #01 — And Now, A Random Dance Sequence

January 4th, 2021

Gotta sell those CDs somehow.

I'm not entirely sure what's up with the Actidol stuff to be honest. This is technically a New Years special, which seems to indicate that Alice in Deadly School is not a full series after all, and indeed the end of this episode is that they should put on the "Alice in Deadly School" play, so… oops, maybe? Episode 01 of this is still on schedule for tomorrow though. January 5th Edit: Despite being advertised as episode 00, it's the same as epsiode 01, except minus the Alice in Deadly School portion. So… whatever.

Impressions:

My initial impressions from the previews still hold here. It's a very generic "girl wants to be an idol" show, but also GLOBAL APOCALPYSE. It's playing the apocalypse side exceedingly close to the vest though. There's an early flash to it, and then she has apparently some kind of panic attack and flashback to it, or perhaps glimpses the real world. Who really knows? It goes from that to a generic corny dance sequence and then the episode just ends. I'm probably making out the potential interesting twists her to be far more interesting than an idol-industry show has any ambition in making them. I'd give about 75% odds right now that it's that there was a disaster and she's repressing something about a dead friend, and that's it. Which does leave the question of the cyborg girl, but like the global apocalypse stuff, she had maybe 10 seconds of screen time in an otherwise completely banal episode.

So… whatever. If you're in it for a generic "girls want to be idols" show, then you're certainly seeming to be getting that. If you were hoping for something more than that, or that they were doing something interesting with its twist, well, the bad news is that they don't even get to what the twist is, let alone execute on it. Maybe that's for the proper episode 1, and I'll probably glance at it just to see if it does indeed do anything, but twenty minutes is a long time to spend faffing about on goddamned nothing as ostensible build-up.
