Deca-Dence #12 — Hooray For our Enslavers!

September 23rd, 2020

Yay for our robot overlords!

I know at least one show from the new season has had an early pre-air episode. I'll get to it tomorrow. I know another one will have one before the weekend too. I'm out of blogging habit and season preview is only half done because I've been lazy.

Impressions:

I have no idea if there was any way to stick the landing, but shows like Casshern Sins or even Tayutama have surprised me. This most definitely did not though. Natsume remained firmly trapped in her role of existing solely to venerate Kaburagi, and I guess all of humanity just doesn't care that they were enslaved, farmed, and murdered for the amusement of robots. In fact, the dystopia promised around episode 6 where a new world and new era for the game would be ushered in starring Kaburagi turns out to be exactly what the montage of the ED says happened. Deca-dence still exists for the entertainment of the robot overlords, but now, activities are less murderous, so it's all cool. Forgive and forget, right? Who cares about centuries of enslavement and oppression? Check it out, we can play a farming minigame!

That would also be glossing over that the episode was just plain boring too. They started out by explaining how they needed to POWER UP and spend the whole thing sitting around basically waiting for it to happen. Then a big explosion and the big bad is defeated. Fantastic. The icing on the cake is that Kaburagi is 'dead' (for approximately the fourth time) for maybe 60 seconds before one of them goes "Oh, right. I cloned him. Did I forget to mention that?" Now, that in itself raises a number of ethical and existential questions, cause the robot dude is still dead. The self-stream ended and a new one began. You didn't bring the original back to life. But that's not a question that this was trying to raise. It just wanted both the tear-jerk martyr moment, and to have a happy ending.

You know it’s bad when aroduc doesn’t even leave closing thoughts.

I’ve been pretty haphazard about that recently. It feels like I’m repeating myself a lot with “had a couple interesting ideas at the start, squandered everything, budget went to zero.”

That probably reflects more on me than shows though, and not favorably.

the state of this twat wearing sugar puffs like gucci

really disappointing anime. It had the potential to be that surprising anime of the season(re:made in abyss), but got caught up in not explaining everything that needed to be explained instead of giving us game tropes at the end. Still flummoxed on the cyborg/robot and the downloading to the human/avatar thing.
