Somali and the Forest Spirit #01 — Murder Cat
January 7th, 2020
So, wait, that cat was telling his friends he was going to murder a random kid because they smelled like barbecue?
Early webcast. Actual broadcast begins on the 9th (Thursdays).
Impressions:
I suppose it's aesthetically pleasant enough, visually and in the soundtrack. The premise seems way better suited for comedy though, and this doesn't have a single humorous bone in its body. There's something massively insincere about how the protagonist is constantly announcing that he is a machine, incapable of emotion or understanding human behavior, and yet every conclusion he reaches is straight from How To Be A Perfect Father. Like at the end. He's griping that she constantly wanders away and he will need to do something to stop that. That would be the perfect time to put her on a leash and treat her akin to an animal. Then again, even that's not all that different from reality, or maybe I've just seen entirely too many themeparks full of children on leashes. Then again, the exposition in this show is not subtle, which takes me out of it a lot too. Thanks, random waitron for that history lesson, it was a nice break from having the golem announce various fun facts about himself to everyone within earshot.
It's not like there's a whole lot else to talk about though because this is something that is not concerned with having any kind of story, nor do I see any possible growth or maturation for either character because they're already the perfect daughter/father. I can't help but wonder where it's supposed to go from here if character and story aren't on the table. Given how most of these shows go, it's just going to be a series of episodes basically identical to this one, which is to say sort of pleasantly soothing, but devoid of any purpose, content, conflict, or point. Yeah, yeah, it's not about any of those things, but there's not much of a story either without any of that either, even if just on an episode by episode basis. It probably wants to be about the world, but worlds are only as interesting as the people in them, and these two are way too flawless and over-idealized to hold my interest.

I enjoyed this with the caveat of this anime probably not getting a second season and an inevitable time skip when tin man gets his heart and realizes it’s interested the hyper active brat has turned into a fine woman its been unconsciously grooming all this episode/years.
I like slice of life fantasy stuff without isekai.
