Outburst Boys #01 — Shout It Out

October 7th, 2019

This season is already fatiguing me.

Impressions:

Well, I feel like after the previous show, this is a marked step up. It's actually trying to be a comedy, it's marginally more organic in the way that it goes on a guided tour through each individual character, and while the animation is definitely often rough around the edges, it certainly has at least a percentage of the frantic energy that all the shouting in the script does. Hell, there's even something almost resembling a minor plot that could have unified the episode, had it not started its development halfway in and forgotten to have a build-up or resolution.

The big "but" that's coming, and I wouldn't even call the above much praise, is that it really has only one joke; someone shouts something silly. It's not humorous banter. It's not witty dialogue. There's no back and forth. It's just a random non-sequitur interjection, almost always drawn from the book of cliches, shouted out approximately every 20 seconds, the exact theme of which to vary by which character is shouting it. Then the female lead will either make a stupid face or shout back some flavor of "That was a silly thing that you have said." As much as recitation of cliches and shouting seem to be the bedrock of Japanese animated comedy lately, it's still not doing it for me.
