The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II #01 — Flashbacks Within Flashbacks

July 6th, 2019

A conversation about a conversation about a conversation.

Impressions:

There was a lot more unpleasant yelling than normally comes with Fate nonsense, especially impotent embarrassed yelling about being virgin, which you'd think a show trying to pretend that it's about adults being dour serious people would want to avoid. Then again, the 'fight' of the episode is a dude staring really really hard as he explains that when he stares hard, his magic eyes make him undefeatable. Twice. He's then defeated by Waver snapping his fingers and giving his own long expository speech about how only an idiot would do the thing that he himself just for no reason did. Also, I'm pretty sure Waver and pal killed at least a dozen slaves. What heroes.

That was the 'exciting' part though. The other half was the framing device, him being forced to tell that story by one of the Fate universe's billion sadists with a penchant for dumb camera angles because one can only do so many different head shots in a ten minute conversation. A conversation that was mostly telling her about another time he had four… count them, four, other conversations. All this to serve as his origin story… except even that is her just going "do a bunch of crap for me" and he goes "eh, sure, whatever." If you were hoping it would promise action, adventure, mystery, or thrills, this episode does none of those things whatsoever, which, admittedly, is very on brand for most Fate properties. Gotta keep the money flowing to the gambling simulator after all.

After making it through Fate/Apocrypha and getting Fate/Burnout during Fate/Extra, this was surprisingly enjoyable.

I honestly enjoyed this quite a lot

I literally never saw any of the rest of the Fate franchise, and didn’t even realize this was a part of it.
