Midnight Occult Civil Servants #01 — The Quest for Snu Snu

April 7th, 2019

I don't think even humans would be safe.

Impressions:

So… angels are apparently about 10 feet tall, and tengu are about 4 feet tall. I'm not saying that I have questions about the physics, but I feel like it probably won't be safe. Anyway, this was a delightfully awful palate cleanser. Terrible production all around, expositionriffic, slow moving, and the protagonist's specialness is handled so badly that it boggles the mind even more than the angel/tengu sex physics question. His special ability is that he Dr Doolittles supernatural critters. This is presented by… having the other human characters at the end of the episode go "Wait, humans actually can't understand supernatural critters." That's right, a post-hoc attempt to make their previously dumbass actions seem more like just dumb actions.

Couldn't we have, say… not understood the angels/tengu to start, thereby creating some kind of mystery to the whole conflict.  You know, establish that people don't understand them as the norm? Then we could've done a whole flashback with exposition in a proper way, and I know how you love flashbacks and exposition. Instead, after the long… loooong setup… the central conflict of the episode is presented as a bunch of imbeciles refusing to listen to any explanations until the protagonist goes "Wait, let me explain," which immediately resolves all. Note also that the angels and tengu can understand each other just fine. They're just all immature dicks. I can only assume future episodes will have fewer weird sex things, so even if this wasn't otherwise boring as snot, the Persona clones would carry the day.
