Hitori Bocchi #01 — Boo Boo Pig Hip

April 5th, 2019

I'd rather see the Sleep Sheep fight the Pig Hip.

Impressions:

I try not to spend a lot of time diving into the source material when I do those season previews, but I distinctly remember in my five minute perusal of this one's manga covering waaaaay the hell more ground than this episode did. So much so that I felt compelled to go back and check… and then to count how many pages of the source this actually covered. The answer is about 15 pages. A four panel comic thing that covered… 15 pages. Don't think it's all just padded out though. The whole start up to her entering the classroom is new. That's right, the part where reusing the exact "falling in defeat in the spotlght" image was the punchline three times in a row? That was the anime creators flexing their creativity to the utmost. Well, that and the veritable hay fever epidemic of cherry blossoms that the episode start and began with.

These kinds of shows all bleed together in my head, and I can't think of much that sets it apart from a billion others, which at this point, I think that there's a significant share of the animation fandom who sees that as a good thing. Perhaps how janky the animation is? It was especially bad during the texting montage, which may have made it the highlight of the episode for the one-two punch of the lead character shutting up and the last bit of plywood holding the artistic integrity up finally giving way. Most of the rest of the episode was… well… non-jokes that I already browsed through in about five minutes of curiosity, stretched out to consume as much of all our lives as humanly possible.
