A Certain Magical Index 3 #05 — Organizational Malfeasance

November 2nd, 2018

Someone break out the org chart.

For the interested, Softhouse Chara also put out its trial for its upcoming game, and it's a doozy. It's spectacularly awful. I'm genuinely unclear on what they were even thinking with this or why they thought it'd be fun. It's almost Daiteikoku-esque in its abandonment of intelligent game design.

Impressions:

This arc has to be a joke. There was a scene where characters literally rattled off a string of affiliations that someone was a part of. "You must be BLOCK." "No, I'm MEMBER, but not actually with MEMBER." "That's right, her real loyalty is like me, a member of Campbell's Chunky Soup Division, formerly of Taco Bell." "And it's personal!" Excuse me, what. That isn't even where that particular character's nonsense stopped. She then summoned a sword and was undone when the dude… blocked it. Aghast look at it being blocked and everything. Then she revealed that she had become a book and now had the power of magic paper or something as part of about a three minute transformation scene where all she did was float in place. Then she was just done for the episode. See you next week, book-girl-who-is-somehow-different-from-the-other-book-girl-because-this-is-a-curse-now-I-guess, we have to check in on the rest of the team… giving a rundown of the situation.

Most of the rest fared little better, and in a lot of ways, were like the dry runs for that. Take a shot every time someone declares someone else to be a member of an organization only to be corrected and then lament your fatally poisoned liver. People would explain powers and then just go "but I'm better" and win. Dude has the power of pointing his magic rock at things and they explode, used precisely twice before he then transforms into the magical exposition machine. Accelerator does more or less the same, except even more insufferable. Remember when they actually kind of tried to show off his vector power waaaaay back in the first run of the first season? I can enumerate the exact difference there. It was more than just "Here's a power… BUT I WIN." Understanding the mechanics was where the fight began, not the climax of it. Still had the same stupid, awful "and then Touma just punches a dude" ending to everything, mind you.

2 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • The Phantom says:

This show should be 100% Accelerator killing people and laughing like a madman after, the rest is just stupid nosense. MEMBER, ITEM, SCHOOL… who came up with these retarded names for a gang?

  • LUNI_TUNZ says:

Misaka’s fight with ITEM in the sisters arc was the best part of the Railgun spinoff.

But I don’t remember (or care about) any of these other characters.
