Goblin Slayer #01 — Torture Porn

Oh good, back to rape. What a lovely season for rape it is.

Impressions:

Beginning with a thirty second closeup of eyes, huh? I think perhaps we should've stayed there considering it would move on to about four straight minutes of exposition before it did the surprise twist that this was actually a super duper serious show with rape and everything! I guess that's what it wants to use to stand out from the thousand other "WE ARE SO SERIOUS. SEE? SOMEONE DIED" fantasy things. Me? I'd have suggested focusing on the animation, characters, or story. But sure, let's run with gangrape. Oh, and peeing herself. Closeup on that too.

Don't get me wrong, it's not crap going sideways in horrifying ways that's the problem here. It's that crap going sideways is where it starts. Your Ga-Rei Zeroes or the like where they show the characters being badasses that subsequently have their asses handed to them? Great. This show? Cocky brats whose first encounter with any hardship whatsoever has them screaming their heads off in terror at the horribleness of it. It's all about the suffering, not the buildup or pulling the rug out from them. There's no rug at all. Suffering is the default. Then Mr Edgy can step in to do his own barely animated torture porn, but of the monsters. Don't worry though, they'll still focus on the ghastly horror of the rape with numerous closeups of broken naked girls staring at nothing. Funderful.

    That is my biggest problem with this episode. They really went so far out of their way to show how stupidly unprepared the rookie party was that I could only expect and half-way want them to get completely destroyed.

    “Lets just rush into this monster den and take this girl healer WE JUST MET AND HAVE NO IDEA HOW COMPETENT SHE IS, OR HOW SHE WOULD COORDINATE ON OUR TEAM. Also, let’s not get any extra items just to be on the safe side to maybe counterbalance that we dragged along another novice on our novice party despite being forewarned about it. We will be completely fine”

    It’s clear we as the audience were supposed to care about these characters, but with how the show doesn’t even have the rookie party introduce themselves to the healer girl, on top of their cockiness, it’s far too easy NOT to care about them when they die/get raped. To make things worse, the party getting wrecked was supposed to show off that the goblins were supposed be some actual force not to underestimate to show off how cool the Slayer guy is. Until, you actually see him work and he just easily kills all the goblins with no trouble whatsoever. Even the big hobgoblin is defeated by tripping him, then stabbing him dead. Couldnt even show the hobgoblin just taking a mortal wound and getting into an actual fight with the Slayer while the Shaman or whatever goblin backing up just make the Slayer have to put in some actual work.

    So yea this was just poorly built-up torture porn for shock value till the overly edgy hero just shows up (while metal plays as BGM) and saves the day. But at least its not a mess of RPG mechanics in fantasy world though, right? Right?

      It is assumed that the author wants to show why the goblins are so terrible because they rape women and nobody hunts them because they give few rewards, but in reality they are not, only when they are numerous or they get power-ups is when they can be some threat, the edgy-slayer is a simple human your techniques simple ones can kill them, but it’s practically a cockroach exterminator in this fantasy world.

    I like this show for having the balls to show that if you are cocky and make a mistake you die, I enjoyed all three of them dying, I wish the rest of the season would remain killing people this way.

    Right, based on the manga chapters, I estimate it would be at about episode 3 when the story gets less…rapey. For good measures I’ll start watching at episode 4. Hopefully the rest of the gang will also have arrived.
