Tada Never Falls in Love #01 — Double Manic, Triple Pixie

April 5th, 2018

Could… Could you at least try not to talk out of your nose?

Impressions:

Well, since this episode lacked anything approaching a narrative, or development, I guess we'll just be focusing on the cardboard cutouts that are the characters, a pack of superficial ninnies. There's the bland Everylead, who spends the whole thing bumbling around, occasionally being aghast at the manic pixie girl's manic pixieness. There's the exceedingly nasal and shrill manic pixie girl, who is impossibly naive, kind, and lavishes chaste affection and attention on the protagonist from the word go. There's the screaming sidekick, who screams, a lot. There's the manic pixie girl's sidekick, who is violent, abusive, and constantly announces how naive and kind the pixie girl is. And there's another manic pixie girl, who's different from the first by having a slightly different hair style. Also, there's a cat. Of course there is. Boy, was that twenty minutes well spent.

I don't even know how you go about fixing this short of rewriting damn near everything. You'd start by adding literally any narrative whatsoever. They meet, they meet again, they continue meeting, and then they meet some more is not a story. Being the first episode isn't a free pass for an episode of nothing but four minute character introduction vignettes. But after you introduce some kind of purpose to events, you'd also have to fix the characters into not being so ridiculous. Well, either that or ramp it up if you want to go in a more comedic direction. The manic pixie girl is the worst offender of the bunch, and not just for the incessant nasally breathy cloy they're trying to pass off as her voice. Make her sound like the goddamned Batman. That would help on dramatic, comedic, and romantic levels.
