Comic Girls #01 — “And Then She Screams”

April 5th, 2018

It's the joke that never stops.

Impressions:

Holy hell. Take it down a notch, and then take that notch down another four. Every goddamned joke cannot be "and then she screams." She gets lost in a daydream and then she screams, thereby missing the train and then she screams. Someone says hello to her, and then she screams. She walks in on someone eating, and then she screams. And then they introduce other characters, like one who gropes others who scream, and then she screams too. I honestly don't think there is a single sixty second span in this entire episode that doesn't have someone screaming. This would be the second episode in a row today that has been an all-out assault on my ears and I'm starting to fear for my aural health. Is that the joke? She's traumatized by everything? First, that's far from unusual in Japanese character writing. Second, have you actually thought this through to its conclusion? That you're paying someone to record literally hours of shrieking?

I would say that at least the director is having a spirited go at it, given the number of bizarre picture in picture cutouts and other weird framing things, but I suspect that, like the screaming in place of writing a joke, it comes from wanting to make the appearance of putting in effort rather than actually putting it in. It does spruce it up visually, the same way that sand in a salad gives it texture. Not that he has much to work with. It's just "girls do nothing… with comics," except there's an extra dose of screaming. Even the supposed central focus on comics is only a hair's breadth above superficial, and I'm only giving it that because it has a few stylistic almost-parodies that the dozen other shows with this exact premise merely alluded to. Take away that though, and it's just yet another Girls Existing show, only pinker and louder.
