Sanrio Boys #01 — “Now, At the End, It Was the Beginning”

January 6th, 2018

Maybe next time, we can start at the beginning.

Impressions:

This show possesses the remarkable ability to make a 20 minute episode feel like it lasted twice as long. I'm tempted to say that never before have I seen something so utterly devoid of life or content, but I'm painfully aware that there will be at least two or three more of these this season alone. And then there's the end of the episode. The boys comfortable in being fans of Sanrio merchandise explain how they're fans of Sanrio. This causes the whitebread lead first to scream in shock, multiple times, but then, to stand, engulfed in the golden glow of transcendence that NOW is when THE STORY OF THE SANRIO BOYS begins.

This was every other damn show of a bunch of sparkly males you've ever seen. The key difference is that they're shilling Sanrio mechandise instead of CDs. That does mean that there are fewer CGI dance sequences, but it's dealer's choice whether that's a plus or a minus. Rest assured that there's no additional content to make up for that. Perhaps that's why it felt so long. The 'humor' is that the lead is insecure and overreacts; the punchline typically being "EEEEH!?" or sometimes "AAAAAH!" There's an extended flashback out of nowhere about how much he's… insecure and once owned a piece of Sanrio mechandise. Otherwise, it's just a tour of characters, leading to the shocking, orgasmic title drop and declaration that after twenty excruciating minutes, as the episode is ending, that the real part is beginning. Maybe today is just the day of total obliviousness in anime. Let's see if we can go three for three. Or three for four if I decided to post about the unfettered lunacy that is Pop Team Epic.
