Pop Team Epic #01 — Once Again, But With Subtitles

January 6th, 2018

Of all the things here, that is what confuses me the most.

Impressions:

I did watch this… well, half of it, since despite being the standard 24 minute episode, it loops back to the start at halfway with no differences as far as I can tell except that the voices switch, and the part in French at the end has subtitles the second go-round, so I feel like I should at least post something, particularly after the three earlier episodes today running the spectrum from dull to outright painful. If you're unfamiliar with the source, it's one of those EVERYTHING IS RANDOM styles of humor, which is pretty faithfully recreated here as shortform little bits, rabidly jumping from one to the next in pure chaos.

As for whether you'll actually find it funny… I don't think I'd go that far, but I'm old and grumpy. It is certainly very strange though, and in a medium that these days is dominated by shows that dare not do anything unusual at all, that's something precious to be treasured. Hell, just having them both be voiced by the deepest voiced men that happened to be in the room at the time shows an understanding of humor and subversion of expectations about ten levels beyond screaming out a recap of the situation.

But is it better than Ai Mai Mi and Somera-chan?

I like bkub’s touhou comics, but not so much his other stuff.

This feels like one of those shows that’s not funny, and that’s the “joke,” and when you say “this isn’t funny.” The show’s fans descend from the sky and inform you that the show’s “joke” is that it’s not funny, and the joke’s on you that you expect comedy in a comedy show.

This will fit nicely next to The Eric Andre Show on adult swim. It’s not funny and it’s not making me laugh, and that’s the point apparently.

Also, all those REACTION image memes that’ll swarm the internet afterwards.
