Itou Junji Collection #01 — Souichi’s Inconvenient Engineering

January 5th, 2018

I think the pica was probably the most unsettling part.

Impressions:

I think a summary would work best here. A creepy kid is creepy, and can also put minor voodoo curses on people. Like make them think a giant spider is attacking them, so they wrap themselves up in toilet paper. Or contruct a giant spider costume and run through the streets, scaring classmates. The latter is actually kind of impressive. Doesn't make an iota of sense. But from an engineering perspective, that's some real engineering blood, sweat, and tears to throw together in an afternoon for a prank. You'd think this is leading up to him getting his just deserts by being killed for being mistaken for an animal/monster, but then Deus Ex Brother pops up and defuses it. The lesson was actually "Poke holes in your frog containers," I guess? And then they try to do Child's Play in about 60 seconds, without any murder, which works out about as well as you'd expect.

I guess you could also chalk this one up in the category of Things Aroduc Doesn't Get, but I have a far stronger grasp on what this is. What I don't understand is the appeal. This is so far below the 'standards' of the more famous Itou Junji things involving various forms of body horror or simply weird going-ons (that result in body horror). I'm not even sure this rises to the level of Goosebumps, let alone Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Even for a short story, there's no actual story here, and it's all just so goofy. Maybe that's the point; just to create screenshots for people to put into their folder of "HILARIOUS Anime Reactions."

2 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

I guess it’s actually “Itou Junji’s Collection of Drafts That Got Rejected Before He Was Famous”

  • LUNI_TUNZ says:

The only thing I’ve read from Itou was the story about the mysterious mountain compelling people to climb into specifically shaped holes.

The whole thing was a slow walk to the SHOCK image at the end, where these random characters decided to out of nowhere have some weird romance sub-plot. I get that it was a short story, and there’s only so much space to tell the story, but, eh.
