How to Keep a Mummy #01 — Hamtaro in Cosplay
January 11th, 2018
What's the niche for a show that feigns absurdism even while fleeing from its own premise?
Impressions:
It's difficult to imagine the elevator pitch conversation for this show.
"How about a show where a regular guy has a pet hamster, but it looks like a mummy."
"But it's a hamster, right?"
"Yeah, but it looks like a mummy."
"Why a mummy?"
"Uhhhh… It's weird?"
"Are you asking me or telling me?"
"Uhhhhhhhhh…"
This strikes me as the compromise between someone who wanted to make a bland show, and someone who wanted to make no show at all. It takes its sweet time easing into the premise of having a pet mummy, despite having already covered it by the title and OP, and then decides that's more than enough absurdity and we need to start dialing things waaaaaay back until it's just Hamtaro without any kind of life lesson at the end to wrap things up. Compare that to Potemayo, which started from its pets spontaneously spawning in the fridge at the very start of the episode, going increasingly feral, laser cannoning the nearby wildlife, and leaving a slaughtered pig on someone's desk. Even that Nyarlathotep harem show subverted expectations at least a little. Blando gets a pet hamster that doesn't look like a hamster. It looks weird. It does the things you'd think a hamster would, except not the fun things like eating its babies. That would have been a marked improvement.

You know, I’ve been following your blog for a very long time and to this day, I still do not understand what your tastes are. What do you like; what don’t you like? It’s not clear at all. I’m genuinely curious as to what anime you’ve found to be entertaining, if there are any.
