Knight’s and Magic #02 — Extra Vulnerable To Protagonists

July 9th, 2017

Good thing he remembered his "Instantly Kill Giant Turtle" spell.

Impressions:

Boy, was the Mary Sueness insufferable this week, and I'm not sure if I can take much more given the still pretty weak CGI masquerading as the action eyecandy. As soon as the protagonist takes over the robot for the cowardly, incompetent adult, it goes faster, its sword is sharper, so on and so bloody forth. Every adult strategy and plan fails, but the turtle made him mad by not showing enough respect to robots (note, not killing people), so he… got fed up and cast a spell that instantly kills it. I'm not sure he was even breathing hard. It takes like 10 other mechs to even put a dent in the thing, but all he has to do is run up and stick whatever vaguely sharp implement is at hand into it and all's good. I'm also about 80% certain that he orgasmed when he started piloting it.

This fight against the turtle would also consume the entire episode. Well, the first half was more running from it than fighting it, but the turtle was the omnipresent thing. Probably okay if it was actually a pitched battle, but alas. First, it was padded out by lots and lots and lots of screaming, both from the protagonist about how great he is now that he has a robot, and just screaming in general from his passenger. Second, CGI turtle shrugging off everything everybody throws at it until the protagonist arrives and effortlessly beats on it for about eight minutes isn't exactly the life or death fight that they seem to think it was. Perhaps they could've at least gone for some visceral appeal, but it only spat fire and stomped on dudes, with the token delayed melodramatic screams long after the slow stomps.

The anime can’t really show all 8 hours of fight between gueir and the big stompy turtle.

  • The Phantom says:

And so the budget is gone, expect talking heads for the remaining of the season and awful CGI.
