Cleanliness Boy! #01 — Like OCD But Not

How far can we push one joke?

Impressions:

Well, this was unpleasantly soccer oriented, with all the godawful sports show tropes to go along with it. There was also about 10 times as much screaming as there was in the promos, another wonderful surprise, if not entirely unexpected. While the source is supposedly much more focused on the comedy, this was very much not, especially in the later going when it was all about the Spirit of Competition and Winning and Friendship and Respecting People's Differences and Rivalry, so on and so forth. Basically every joke was "AOYAMA'S NEAT-FREAKNESS EXTENDS TO THAT DEGREE!?" And it wasn't even for things that were that unusual. For example, not wanting to touch/drink from someone else's slobbery water bottle was one of the things that elicited that supposed punchline. God help Japan when it discovers glutin free food in 2025. I can only imagine the 'hilarious' jokes made about that.

As is oft the case, we have two shows here, and neither are done particularly well. There's the utterly banal sports drama, and the screamy thing trying to pass as comedy. The latter is a little more stomachable than the former, and does at least have some visual humor, often tangential to the yelling, but the primary jokes are loudly declaring that the unusual situation is unusual. And of course, not one of those non-jokes can go by without being repeated at least three or four more times. After one episode, the repetition is already starting to grate. The future seems bleak.

4 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Sanjuro says:

This show would be better if they were in some sort of Glasses Club instead of a soccer one.

  • The Phantom says:

Yea stretched is the word that fits the show perfectly, I have no clue how are the going to do a full season of this, it was already out of ideas mid episode 1.

  • The Phantom says:

On a friend recommendation I watched an old anime I never saw before: Denpa teki na Kanojo, heavily recommended, good stuff.
