Battle Girl High School #01 — Random Idol Concert

July 2nd, 2017

They're not really random at this point, are they?

That Jump comedy about a clean soccer boy technically aired before this, but it's MIA at the moment in any sanely consumable form. It's late enough at this point for me to go do other things than idle at my system assuming it'll pop up soon. I'll get to it when I get to it.

Impressions:

Another show that badly needed some or all of the cast to be stabbed in the face just so it could at least pretend to have some kind of dramatic element. To its credit, the first half did focus a bit more on the battle girl side of things than the high school. But then I have to take that credit away because they spent the entire time shrieking at each other. One of them even immaturely stomped her feet and yelled about the monsters picking on her friends while slaughtering it and its extended family. Nothing wrong with being flippant in the face of danger, but the only danger was friendly fire, and I prefer quips, not brain dead morons having mini-tantrums. Nor was it particularly visually exciting. A couple moments had them put effort into animating the (non) fighting, but for the most part, they liked to do that thing where the screen flashes to reveal a character in a pose while the monster explodes behind them, which is to actually animating a fight as playing in piped music is to having a live orchestra. Also, there was this idol bit apropos of absolutely nothing, except to have some goddamned idols.

And then the second half arrives, and it's all high school all the time. Perhaps even worse, they seem to be going for an ensemble-type thing, so it just bounces around from one airheaded imbecile to the next, without even pretending like there's anything going on in the slightest or bothering to have the characters do anything besides giggle and blush. I guess perhaps it's preferable to a mountain of infodumping, but we're just trading one form of padding for another. They do fight a little bit at the end, but it's quickly back to posing and cutting away to the peanut gallery to remark on the coolness of the clanging sounds happening in the background. And then the (supposedly) big event happens; a new girl shows up who's not as friendshippy as the rest. Which will no doubt lead to her learning the magic of friendship. Joy.

This show already suffers from having too many characters, and then the vague threat of them losing their touch even though they manage to collectively kill a group of monsters and still make it back to the idol concert in a reasonable amount of time.
