A Centaur’s Worries #01 — Teenage Wasteland

July 9th, 2017

I can report with immense relief that there is nothing in this episode involving anybody comparing vaginas. Whew.

Impressions:

To its credit, it also just kind of runs with the setting without a ton of pointless attempts at justification or self-indulgence for how clever it's being… kind of. There's this especially out-of-place quasi-evolution lesson halfway through that's shoved in having nothing to do with either part, and one other place where someone takes a timeout to briefly explain what they all already know, but nobody has a long internal introduction speech, or goes on a mental tour of all the other characters solely to appease the goat that lives in their heads and feeds on exposition.

That said, failing to commit grave sins isn't the same as being good. It's not really making any particular effort to be funny or interesting, just slot itself right into that "girls do nothing, but are friends," while adding "…and are demihumans!" to the tail end of that. In the first part, they put on a play, and aside from the platform collapsing, which at least three or four people said it would, it goes perfectly through a series of montages. And in the second half, they kind of meander around as they jog, chattering pointlessly about… jogging mostly, I guess? If you're not providing drama or comedy, then I guess we're relying on the bouncing breasts and upskirt shots.

“Girls do nothing, but are friends” is actually an endorsement in my book.

I appreciate that Japan hasn’t quite reached western TV’s blunt object method of teaching us lessons. If this were a western sitcom we’d get an entire spiel eight minutes in along the lines of “actually not being sexually attracted to centaurs is wrong and you’re a bad person” and it would be hitting us over the head with a mallet repeatedly.

I demand you to cover this show till the vaginas are compared.

No pussy comparison…my reason for giving a fuck gone.

I kinda liked the opening sketch, worn-out yuri overtones notwithstanding, and Hime and Nozomi’s… thing is kinda cute, I look forward to them fucking that up soon if the “gay, but not really” trend holds up.

The only point where this, AND MANY monster/human related material, consistently lose me is conflating monster speciesism with human racism. Like, get out of here with that. I know each work has it’s own logic or reason as to how and why, and I haven’t read the manga so I don’t know how it expounds on it, but so far almost none gives that topic any other context than “humans/racism bad” “equality good, no matter what”.

That “history” lesson conclusion and those two faceless spooks kinda irk the shit out of me.

Welp, it’s a real shame you didn’t get to episode 4, because here comes the vagina comparison stuff.

Probably a good call not to with that bit for episode 1.
