Akashic Records #06 — The Wide World of Idiots

May 9th, 2017

Show, you are nowhere even close to as clever as you think that you are.

Impressions:

Was this episode written by chihuahuas? I don't even know what to call the nonsense that was basically everything that happened this week. Deliberate obfuscation solely so it could play at 'surprises' almost fits, except about 95% of what it obfuscated, it either did so just to explain how everyone was clever for figuring it out, was painfully obvious the moment it kicked off, or both. I think my favorite (as in the worst) was how Glenn explained that he figured out that the secret message that he and SPECIFICALLY HIM FOR SOME REASON had to get close to the queen, which combined with a bunch more hand waving, meant that he was supposed to use his unique AoE null-magic ability. You know what might've worked better there? If the instructions had been "Use your null-magic ability on the queen." Similarly, why was Glenn disguised at all? It was already obviously him from the get-go, but why did they even do it at all? Instead of the teacher and student that were SUPPOSED to be there, here's two random people complete unassociated with the class, who want to get close to the queen. It's a wonder the queen hasn't been assassinated already if security is just like "Yeah, that doesn't seem suspicious at all."

I don't even know why those two newbies were introduced. They ended up just being warm bodies to impersonate in a situation where nobody needed to impersonate anybody at all, or at worst, impersonating literally anybody else would've made more sense. And it's not even like they lost any guards with the distraction stunt considering both the swarm around them and the barrier put up to keep them out. I guess at least you can say that events transpired, which shows like Re:Creators are still struggling to achieve. Its last episode featured an info dump, followed by the government whisking them away so they could be further briefed, but in a different room. For fifteen minutes. This was still abject nonsense in every way and every attempt to explain the logic behind it only served to point out how nothing anybody was doing followed any human logic at all.

“It was already obviously him from the get-go”

I’m guessing that to a good 80% of the target audience, it… wasn’t.

  • The Phantom says:

What kind of person can believe that translating something that is supposed to be close to Riel as Re=l is normal? They even listed her in the webpage as Re=l, are these guys so dumb that think that Re=l as a name is ok?

” are these guys so dumb that think that Re=l as a name is ok?”

there’s a rule I have, lots of variations on it, about “not asking questions you already know the answer to.” no matter how depressing that answer may be

  • LUNI_TUNZ says:

How even was the transmutation round scored? What makes that girl’s angel any better than dude’s bid ass dragon?

Also, now that you mention it typically people who aren’t supposed to be at certain places in an arena typically get asked to fuck off by security, and that’s before they dosey-do up to the Queen.

    New YGO! today, Aroduc.

I’m counting on you. There’s only a way up for this season.

    • Aroduc says:

I hate to disappoint, but man, come on. Kid with hair that looks like a unicorn barfed on it “hates standing out” but makes new friends through THE LOVE OF CARD GAMES.

It would be in a hole to start. And involve me actually doing something in an evening. Ever since ATX jettisoned that timeslot, I don’t think there’s been anything even slightly watchable in the evenings.

      • ZakuAbumi says:

Eh, they more or less scrapped that premise and apparently there’s no friendship pathos either. Official word even has it they’ll focus a lot more on plot this time than the actual thing. The writer has done some darker stuff too (Sacred Seven though… that was just sad).

Not to mention you gave the hippo one a try.

Also, they didn’t have a single duel in episode 1. Now that’s unique for the franchise.

Like, this is just as legit as most other stuff that airs in a season. Certainly can’t be worse than half of it. At worst, you’ll waste 24 minutes.

Ah, well. It was worth a try I guess.

By anime standards though, I’m enjoying the heck out of this one, stupid or not, and that’s really all I can ask for.
