The Laughing Salesman #01 — The Not-So-Twilight Zone
April 3rd, 2017
Laser hands.
Impressions:
This was just as much anti-comedy as the bits I watched previously. You can't even really call it a Twilight Zone knockoff either. The first half's bit is a couple office workers going to a hostess club during lunch. The 'twist' that damns them is that they get drunk off their asses, rack up a huge bill, and get yelled at by their boss. I have no idea what the joke is supposed to be in there. The weird retro way they draw people? Especially their mouths? That their boss has a Hitler stache? The second one could at least pass for a Twilight Zone premise. He gives a frumpy lady a credit card where everything she buys with it is repossessed the next day. So she uses it to buy a makeover, whereupon he uses his magic powers to make her fat and ugly. It's not even anything subtle like she wakes up that way. He ambushes her in a dark alley and shoots uglification lasers.
So it's not really humor in any way, dark or otherwise, nor can you call "salary men slack off by getting drunk" much of a horror story. It's hard to even call these twist endings either when characters pretty much straight up go "Surely he can't repossess the beauty I would get from a makeover," and especially not when they're resorting to laser hands to do so. So what the hell is it supposed to be then? A question I'm sure we'll be returning to for plenty more shows this season, even the ones without laser hands.

I really don’t see what this show thinks it’s doing. I guess Slacking off at work in Japan is the most REPREHENSIBLE thing anyone could do, but why was the second dude identified as the victim? He was a completely limp dick who was basically coerced into it in the first place.
And the second chick basically is given a blank credit card, and is bad because she shops too much, on top of that, she’s bullied at work, and hr bullies get off cot free.
The punishments felt disproportionate, the victims were whiny little nobodies that I didn’t care to see get comeuppance.
Also, the salesman looks like Sesame Street’s version of Humpty Dumpty.
