Sakura Quest #01 — The Town of Old LARPers
April 5th, 2017
Yeah, we need to make LARPing sentimental.
Impressions:
Aaah, the PA Works 'Working Girl' show, featuring an idealistic 18.0000000001 year old going on 5, who just wants to do the thing she loves, entertaining people, but is frustrated when she has to work with some not-immediately-friendly people and isn't immediately handed to her on a silver platter. Luckily, she has pluck, friendship, and tries her best, so everything is handed to her on a silver platter. It's completely different from all the other girls friendship club shows because the character sheet says that they're a year older, there's at least one adult male involved, and instead of just a club, it's the whole town dedicated to the activity, in this case, fantasy LARPing. Which is to say, not at all. Brainless moron moves in, gets tour, meets cast of 'quirky-but-not-really' characters, and an entire goddamned episode passes on exposition and 20 second character introductions, ending with an affirmation that she is indeed just the most precocious, girlish girl ever.
So no. This does basically nothing to distinguish itself from the many, many, many, goddamned uncountably huge many number of completely identical shows. Even for a PA Works brand bit though, it seems on the low end, but what do I know. The main character is competitive with Sagrada's for lack of personality, and she spends most of the episode staring, doe-eyed like a non-Seattle zombie, only occasionally perking up to go "I know I'm not the previous person, but I can do it too!" And they don't even stick to that, because she's such a moron that the 'premise' is that she didn't realize she agreed to stay in the dumb town. Those two things would also be the sole bits of 'conflict' in the entire episode, so hell if you can call it a drama either. Here's a town of LARPers. Here's a girl who remembers how magical it was to LARP for a day, but LARP as an adult full time!? 24 minutes saved.

I love Shirobako because the writer and director have an insight into the industry in question. Sakura Quest is clearly written by outsiders. Heck, even ‘Locodol’ is more realistic!!
