The Outcast #02 — Necrophilia
July 16th, 2016
Beats flashbacks.
Impressions:
This was pretty far outside the bubble by the first episode, but I decided to mention it mostly for the fight sequence, which was quite well directed and animated. The big issue, though, is that it started barely a couple minutes into the episode, and then they didn't actually get to it until around 15 minutes in because they got sucked into a particularly idiotic ten minute flashback about how special the protagonist is, and how he can only use his super powers in dire situations. Apparently being tested to see if he has powers counts as a dire situation. As does not being embarrassed by being caught naked after spending hours watching teenagers screw. In any case, a protagonist actually willing and able to fight, and some effort in the animation and talent in the direction is a very far cry from the screaming ninny from last week.
It's just a shame the rest of the episode was nowhere close to that minute and a half. Especially the part where the female lead's eyes were bugging the hell out. Then again, they attempted to combine 'comedy' with fanservice with necrophilia, so even when the flashbacks were over, there were still plenty of issues. It needs to build on the action and leave behind all the exposition if I'm going to feel like sticking with it. Then again, it does air early on a weekend, so maybe it'll be a Blood-C thing where I just roll my eyes and enjoy a minute or two of fights… assuming they haven't blown the budget already.
