Taboo Tattoo #02 — Bluesy
July 11th, 2016
The names in this show are… not good.
Impressions:
All the problems of the first episode with none of the strengths. Maybe the wonky tone was a little more consistent overall, but that's probably because it spent so much more of its time on bland info dumping. It still stuck out like a sore thumb, especially in the godawful school bit which shouldn't exist at all. The action also unfortunately gave way to extra extra exposition explaining such vital things as "magic tattoos are magic," and "magic can be used as a weapon," and "war is bad." No action also means that the protagonist gets stuck being a put upon doormat to every Tom, Dick, and Harry for the weak attempts at comic relief, and when he's not, his job is to just stand around getting talked at while he nods obligingly.
It did end on a relatively high note though, with stabbings by the mind controlled obligatory muggle/childhood friend and the little effort that was put into the animation this week, although I question why they would think it was worth overanimating a zoom up to walking over to the door. I still wouldn't hold my breath for them capitalizing it at the start of next episode since this is JC Staff after all, but maybe they saved up enough pennies from barely animating most of this episode to put together at least three to four minutes of solid action. Or maybe like certain other shows I could name, this is juts going to pull the 'exciting' cliffhanger card every single week and peter out with a fart at the start of each episode.

I got a bit worried at the school bit that the action was a front for another School Slice of Life show, WITH A TWIST. But if they can keep that shit to a minimum, this looks to be a half-decent show.
The comedy could use some work, it feels like left over Milky Holmes jokes, which don’t quite work here, because of the tonal differences.
