Comet Lucifer #02 — Magical Pet

I think every character has brain damage.

Impressions:

A step down here too, that just seemed to accelerate in its self-destruction as the episode went on. The biggest problem is that the characters continues to act basically insane, or at the very least, like they're not connected to reality in any way, including but not limited to the manic magical pixie girl who is insane. Everyone just takes it completely in stride like they find telekinetic girls in giant holes while being attacked by multiple giant robots every single day, not to mention magical talking rocks, except that they also shout in surprise at each of these things before immediately forgetting it again 5 seconds later. Other than that, they pretty much just hang around and announce things happening right in front of them. "That stone talked!?" "That girl wants to eat!?" "How is that plate floating!? I've only seen her use her telekinesis five times before!"

The weird writing and directing isn't helping either. My favorite moment of bizarre directing would be when they started just panning over the CGI floor. It was supposed to be from the perspective of the magical pet they were about to introduce, which is another problem in and of itself. The action scene suffered from it too. Mech #2 unloads a minigun barrage literally into the face of Mech #1 from point blank range, but luckily, Mech #1 has the same invulnerability of the plucky young teenagers, and is completely unfazed by it. So… I guess everyone is invulnerable to all harm then, nobody was ever in any real danger at all, and not much was at stake. If that doesn't make the rest of the fight interesting, I don't know what could.
