Gunslinger Stratos #02 — Exposition!

April 11th, 2015

You can never have too much of it!

Impressions:

There was something magical about how they handled the cliffhanger of a bullet being shot at Protagonist A. He… moved out of the way, whereupon Protagonist B jumped forward and held him at gunpoint again as a new cliffhanger going into the OP. When they came out of it, he… moved again. And yet, this was infinitely preferable to the 18 goddamned straight minutes of exposition that was to follow. Part of it even included Protagonist A having a goddamned tea party with stuffed animals, as if the weird Victorian costumes with shoulderpads the size of rottweilers aren’t bad enough. Someone wrote that scene, someone else directed it, and a bunch more people drew it, and somehow “tea party with stuffed animals” made it into the final cut. How? This is the same character that you’re trying to be all angsty with a dead sister and existential crises about “why fight”. You are aware of that, right? Why did we even leave Daibanchou world so soon in the first place? That’s the only thing that’s interesting about this entire affair.

Edit: Luckily, UBW brought their C- game with another episode also full of exposition, flashbacks, and even less action than this, just off-screen stabbing/slashing cause that’s how great Gil is, doesn’t even need to show his work, just making me want to dig in my heels against it more. Plastic Memories dropped most (but not all) of its maudlin bits to focus more on screaming, so I’m not calling that enough of an improvement either. Yuck, this season. Yuck.

Next Episode:

Guy in a chair.
