Chaika #13 — Protip: Put Bullets in Gun
October 8th, 2014

Gun-Haver remains the strongest super hero. Pretend-Gun-Haver does not.
Impressions:
Well, at least it wasn’t a clips show, although most of it was a mix of subtle and not-so-subtle recap as they run down the line of reminding us the history of events, who the characters are, what class they chose, what their quest is, and who’s trying to sleep with who. All that plus a long info dump about how magic works for reasons I can’t begin to fathom. I would not call it one of the better episodes and this was a series that exemplified mediocrity to begin with. It’s hard to feel that they accomplished much regardless when the episode ended at the exact same place it was five minutes in, but now the cliffhanger is for real.
It’s nice to see that the godawful writing of the last arc of the previous season has somehow stretched out into this one with one of the B squad apparently spontaneously turning into a Chaika due to… uh… grief? All the faffing about casting magical spells from their guns faster probably also fits into the exceptionally moronic writing category. She can cast a spell in only a short sentence that… fires a projectile from her gun! You know what’d be even faster than that with the same effect? Putting regular bullets in your gun. Same probably goes for all the schmucking about with “I’ll fight my hardest” and “I’ll do whatever it takes to get that gooey heart!” so long as it’s a fair contest at whatever time you’d like, not to the death, and you can go ahead and pick the rules too. I mean, sure, we want it, but only if that’s convenient for you. That also does a fantastic job of keeping the cliffhanger (or even the fight) from having even the barest trace of weight or tension to it. Stakes on the battle? Pfft. We can stretch this out a whole extra episode at least!
Next Episode:
Red Chaika again.

“Its okay if we lose the battle cause we can just steal the parts anyway!”
Oh goddamnit.
Anyway, the next Yozakura Quartet OVA should be out in Japan now. So it might show up somewhere tomorrow or later.
