Nozaki #03 — Tomboy and Underwearman

July 20th, 2014

Together, they try my patience.

Impressions:

Another character introduction episode, although a little less boringly paradey of them in sequence than last week. It was still very much “Here they are, these are their gimmicks, let’s run them into the ground with a decided obliviousness that we’re fully indulging in the exact same cliches we’ve just pointed out.” And I come out of the episode again thinking that there are so many worse comedies this season, and yet I would not care in the slightest if this suddenly disappeared forever. Even the few jokes I do chuckle at invariably get repeated so often that it leaves a bitter taste.

Anyway, this week was the standard tomboyish girl that all the girls fawn over, and her no-fun-allowed boyfriend-but-not-really. She makes flowery backgrounds explode constantly, he hits her, they talk about underwear. Again, the absolute slightest, barest, most minimum bit of structure or episodic plot element would help things so much. This is the third episode of “She meets some people.” That’s not a narrative. That’s not even something that should needs to be established to the tune of three episodes, possibly more. The character quirks and gags should be used in furtherance of something else, not as the sum and total of the content.

I was impressed by Chiyo’s ability to turn that giant piece of stage around without even moving it though. Good attention to detail, team.

Next Episode:

Bunnyman.
