Chaika #11 — “Oh My God, They Killed Fredrika!”
June 18th, 2014

You bastards!
You know, it could be kind of an amusing series gag if they keep ‘killing’ her.
Impressions:
I’m really surprised at how dull this episode ended up being. Maybe it was how every reveal was both delivered as boringly as possible by way of lecturing heads and was painfully obvious ten minutes to a week to months prior in the case of Blue/Denial (if we’re still going with the stages of grief model) Chaika. Or maybe it was how poorly handled the mind control thing was and how that’s going onward to a third episode. You’re making it obvious as day to the audience with the glowing eyes, and it’s not treated as anything particularly special requiring any effort or unique skills, yet Touru is baffled by how his woman could suddenly be transformed into an emotionless betrayer… at length… and needs it explained to him. Speaking of which, his random four minute adventure with the two girls who were also skulking about the flying castle somehow was also mystifying for any number of reasons, but mostly purpose.Â
It was probably just that they barely covered any ground at all that wasn’t standing around explaining their evil plans, and the gigantic problem still remaining there is that the antagonists are just silly. Their grand plan is “Kill everybody for giggles,” and that’s summarizing about five minutes of just random exposition. I can’t remember if I made a joke about them being so comically evil that his magical fortress was powered by the blood of orphans last week, but I really hope so because that turned out to be exactly what it was. There’s also Overly-Make-Uped Chaika’s shocking reveal of the ‘truth’ comes with the dubious claim of creating a cabal of mindwiped clones being the coldly rational. If you want to have a completely silly and nonsensical plot and antagonists like this, fine. Just for God’s sake, stop spending all your time focusing on them and how bloody inane they are. You have neither the flash nor the pacing to let that fade into the background as a weird excuse to be going on your otherwise relatively standard fantasy adventures.
Next Episode:
Touru finally remembers that he has magical powers too.

Come on, it had nice fight sequences and notCG horses, it’s definitely improving.
